Family-friendly films dominated the box office over the US Thanksgiving weekend, with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I bringing in another $50.3 million in grosses for $220.3 million to date. The seventh film in the series is holding up well, taking strategic advantage of the holiday weekend to increase its grosses rapidly. The film's weekend numbers were down 60%, but this is not surprising considering the film had a massive opening the week prior.
In second place was Tangled, Disney's latest computer-animated family film. The production and marketing efforts for Tangled have been complicated, with the film having a tough time determining its target audience. The machinations appear to have paid off, with the film grossing a respectable $49.1 million over the weekend, and $69 million since opening on Wednesday.
Third place went to Megamind, which continued to hold well in its fourth weekend of release despite increased competition from other family films. The Dreamworks animated comedy grossed another $12.8 million, for $130.5 million in grosses so far.
In fourth place was newcomer Burlesque, which had an $11.8 million weekend, and $17 million in grosses since opening on Wednesday.
Finally, fifth place went to Unstoppable, which continued its gradual decline. It was down 9.7% week-over-week, adding another $11.7 million for $60.7 million in grosses after three weekends in release.
