Steve Carell and Tina Fey's new comedy, Date Night, from 20th Century Fox brought in $27.1 million during its opening weekend to take the #1 spot from last weekend's big opener, Clash of the Titans.
Titans fell 56% to $26.8 million, landing in second place. The Sam Worthington-starring action pic has pulled in a total gross of $110.5 million domestically, so far, with another $119 million overseas. With a production budget of around $125 million, it appears that Warner Bros. gamble on the mythological action picture has paid off.
Third place went to How to Train Your Dragon, falling a remarkable modest 12.6% to $25.3 million in its third weekend. The film has been enjoying great word of mouth, and as a result audiences have been going to see the Dreamworks' kid's pic instead of the so-so reviewed Titans.
Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too fell a whopping 62% for $11 million in its second weekend, but with $48.5 million in domestic grosses so far and a production budget of just $20 million, Lion's Gate Films will have to complain all the way to the bank.
Finally, Miley Cyrus' family-friendly pic, The Last Song, fell 32.5% in its second weekend, to $10 million. Disney is another studio that is likely pleased with its return on investment on the $20 million picture, as it has grossed $42.4 million so far.
This coming weekend sees the release of two pictures that could go either way for their respective studios, Lion's Gate's R-rated superhero pic Kick Ass and Sony's Chris Rock/Martin Lawrence/Tracy Morgan-starring ensemble remake, Death at a Funeral. Kick Ass' R-rating could keep the target audience out of movie theatres, and Death at a Funeral's morbid appeal is a tough sell to a broad audience. Neither pic will appeal to family audiences, so expect How to Train Your Dragon to continue to do well.
