Pixar's Toy Story 3 followed the lead of its predecessors, posting a series' best opening weekend of $109 million once all was said and done. Toy Story 3 rode a wave of great reviews, audience anticipation and a broad demographic appeal to a stellar opening that only bodes well for the weeks to come. Toy Story 2 opened with $57 million in 1998, eventually grossing $245 million. The original film in the series, the first major 100% computer animated film, opened with $29 million leading to an overall gross of $192 million. Toy Story 3 had the advantage of higher 3-D ticket prices, and with such a massive opening weekend should have no trouble becoming the top grossing film in the series.
Last weekend's number one film, the remake of The Karate Kid, fell 46% to $29 million in its second weekend. The film has grossed $106 million so far, turning a nice profit for distributor
Third place went to last weekend's number two film, The A-Team. It suffered a similar drop-off to The Karate Kid, but with a much lower starting point grossed $13.8 million for a cumulative total of just under $50 million to date.
In fourth place was hold-over Get Him to the Greek, adding another $6 million for a decent, but not stellar, total gross of $48 million after three weeks.
Finally, the fifth place slot at the weekend box office went to Shrek Forever After, grossing an additional $5.5 to bring its total to $223 million after five weeks.
The other wide opener this weekend, Jonah Hex, opened with a thud, landing in 8th place with $5 million
