One, Two, Freddy Came For You
Warner Bros. reboot of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, starring Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Krueger, took the #1 spot at the box office over the weekend, with $32.2 million. This is a very respectable opening in the series, although not as strong as Freddy vs. Jason's $36M opening weekend in 2003.
Second place went to Dreamworks' How to Train Your Dragon, bringing in $10.8 million in its sixth weekend for a cumulative gross of $192 million so far.
The third spot was taken by another holdover, Fox's Date Night, which brought in $7.6 million in its fourth weekend for a total of $73.6 million to date.
The Back-up Plan brought in $7.2 million in its second weekend. Its $23 million gross so far sheds serious doubt on star Jennifer Lopez' bankability going forward. She'd be smart to stick to ensemble pieces for a while.
Finally, Summit Entertainment's Furry Vengeance opened weakly, landing in 5th place with $6.5 million. The blame for the failure can likely be placed on Vengeance's mediocre marketing campaign. The high concept plays right into star Brendan Fraser's wheelhouse.
