Explosive 'Expendables' Take First Place, 'Pilgrim' Underwhelms

Sylvester Stallone's latest action flick, The Expendables, rocketed to a great start for a mid-budget action movie, bringing in $35 million in its opening weekend.  The film, starring, written and directed by Stallone also features a long list of action heroes in various roles, including Dolph Lundgren, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, Jet Li, 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin and even a cameo by Arnold Schwarzneggar.  

Second place went to Julia Roberts' newest film, Eat Pray Love, based on the best-selling memoir of the same name.  It opened with a very respectable $23.7 million in box office grosses.

Last weekend's #1 opener, The Other Guys, fell 49% in its second weekend to claim the number three spot with $18 million.  The Will Ferrel/Mark Wahlberg buddy-cop comedy has grossed just over $70 million in its first 10 days of release.

'Other Guys' Win Weekend Race

Will Ferrel and Mark Wahlberg's new cop comedy The Other Guys opened in the number one spot this weekend, bringing in an estimated $35.6 million dollars.  The opening represents Will Ferrel's best opening since Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and Wahlberg's best since Planet of the Apes.

Second place went to hold over Inception, starring Leonard DiCaprio.  The thriller from director Christopher Nolan continued its gradual decline, falling 32% to $18.6 million in its fourth weekend.  The cumulative total for the picture so far is just under $228 million.

Inception Takes Third Weekend, Leaves 'Schmucks' Behind

Christopher Nolan's Inception, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, took the box office crown for the third weekend in a row, falling just over 35% for a $27.5 million take.  With $193 million in grosses to date, the film continues to be a huge success for distributor Warner Bros.

The second place slot went to newcomers Dinner for Schmucks, from Paramount/Dreamworks Pictures.  The Steve Carrell/Paul Rudd comedy opened with a respectable $23.3 million.

Inception Continues Its Reign, Puts Wound In Salt

Christopher Nolan's follow-up to The Dark Knight, Inception, has taken box office gold for the second weekend in a row.  Riding a wave of good reviews and great word of mouth, the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring thriller dropped only 30% in its second weekend, adding $43.5 million to its total for $143.6 million in two weeks.

Second place went to Angelina Jolie's latest action flick, Salt.  The film brought in $36.5 million in its opening weekend for distributor Sony Pictures.

Inception Takes Crown Over Busy Weekend

The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan's latest film, Inception, had a stellar opening weekend, taking in $60.4 million over its first three days.  The Leonardo DiCaprio-starring film was buoyed by an aggressive marketing campaign that revealed stunning imagery while holding back relevant plot details.  Audiences were obviously intrigued, and critical response was good, leading to an excellent opening weekend for the big budget movie.  Inception also represents a career-high opening weekend for DiCaprio.

Second place went to last weekend's #1 film, the family-friendly Despicable Me.  Dropping a modest 42%, the film took in $32.7 million, bringing its total so far to $118.3 million after two weeks in release.
